Welcome back! I know, I know… I haven’t updated for over a week. My firewall blew up and I had to fix it and re-program it before I could get any internet to work. This resulted in my presence not gracing the web, until yesterday. That’s why I’ve spent a very, very long time hand-compiling this large list of domain tld’s, their meanings, their registrars, as well as their prices. This is kind of a … a bribe, or incentive, for you all. Enjoy!

Sorry I haven’t updated for a few days. Fruda got dugg again, and the URL was not pointing to the article, rather it was pointed to my root @ Fruda.com, and I was still receiving digg traffic so I just left the article up.

I have a few updates to share today.

I’ve partnered up with David on a largely small (yes, largely small) blog. Its all about quality Photoshop tutorials, with an update each and every day. We’ve got an excellent theme for it, not a Wordpress theme - a blogging theme. We have a logo sketch, and I’ll probably be hiring OrangeOnWeb to create the main icotype for it. I’ve already been talking to Oleg (CEO) about a whole icon set so hopefully this can be included.

I’m working on another project for Blogonize. A media player suite. I’ve completed all the mp3/podcast player UI designs already, and must say I quite like how they turned out. I’m also creating a (yes, a … FLV - Flash Video Player, so “an Flash Video Player” makes no sense) FLV player, and then possibly show them off.

I’ve been talking with another client about re-designing his site, which would be somewhat of a larger job, so I’m sorry if I don’t have an update every day for you all.

I’ve also finally installed Akismet. I get hundreds of spam comments a day, and decided to just go for the API key. It was pretty easy, and I recommend installing it if you don’t have it yet.

And that’s it. Just a very quick update.

Ciao!

Today, the stock market *stumbled. The stock market fell because of one country - China. We’re so caught up in outsourcing and Chinese affairs, when people realize that what they’re paying pennies for is worth less than pennies, our whole NASDAQ and DOWJONES markets crash (or plunge). Look at this:

Today, a video was released with hundreds of stats, predictions, and facts. The Coming Crisis. It presents some accurately interesting facts, and gives many predictions on what the world will be in coming life.Over these recent years of “renaissance“, with more creative business, strategies, start-ups, knowledge, thinking, all of this 2.0-new-era / new-gen, there have been thousands of books written and published on social/humanism, outsourcing, asia, quality of life - et cetera. My favorite book I’ve read so far on these subjects has to be “Mindset” (by John Naisbitt). The book gets into modern life, business, outsourcing, creative thinking, and prediction. It provides sets of mindsets for new outlooks on life and the future. It gets into how the payroll finds its way around Asia and India, much better than (for instance) the US.What am I telling you? What word have I been using and defining throughout that introduction? Outsourcing. Its who you thank for losing your job. In this new world of ours, we need stunningly ambitious attributes to survive. We need creativity, we need ambition, we need hard QUALITY work. For many many days, weeks … months, even, I’ve been thinking about this subject and topic. These are my thoughts compiled. Its tougher to outsource things like design to places like India and China. To design, it takes creativity. People are slowly learning how to be creative, scientifically. They’re learning about the halves of your brain. They’re learning how it works, scientifically, and how to become creative. They’re taking what they learn, and they’re teaching it to willing and ambitious citizens of the overpopulated “outsource” countries. They’re all willing to learn, they’re all willing to work for cheap, they’re all willing to spend hours and hours in the toughest conditions to support their families. But here you are, you need to stay alive too. You need to support yourself at some point of life or another. You need to be smart, and not just think you’re smart. If you live in America, you may think you’re very smart. You may think you’re going through one of the best education systems ever established. You’d never think there is some guy in some country in some third-world city that is incredibly smarter than you are, that has a better future than you do. But, there is. The United States has one of the worst education systems in the world, the United States used to be the massive world power. Now, its China. Its a 1.3 billion population against a 300 million population, only 5% of our nearly 7 billion. So how do you stop this?

Don’t be lazy. People who are determined are not lazy. They’ll start something and finish something, they’ll work as hard as they can to learn, construct, and perfect every detail and element there is. Their ambition to learn, their determination to surpass and succeed the current powers … surpasses and succeeds our current powers. People begin to think they have “the life”, and the slack off. America is one of the most guilty countries of doing this.

Quality over quantity. You’ve heard of this millions of times before, yet I can find an example in less than 15 seconds of this ‘motto’ being put to shame by desperate people (see point 3 for desperation). If you stick to quality, quantity will come. You have to work on perfecting your quality to receive your quantity. Think about it, this is an only logical thing to say. Let’s take a popular example from the design world. I find many early designers find instant gratification most valuable. They under-price themselves to simply have a chance in competition with the higher standards designers. They’ll try to create 10 designs at $100 each, or sell 10 designs for $20 each. I don’t even open up Photoshop for $100. There is one definite remedy, cure, for this. Practice (and patience). Its undoubtedly more valuable to spend your time learning and perfecting quality designs, and entering the market as a confident, experienced designer than a desperate, unskilled “newbie” hoping to make $50 as quick as they can.

Desperation kills. If you’re desperate, it shows. It shows your belief in needing something and it looks simply terrible. Desperation shows weakness, and that’s when you get pushed and taken advantage of the most. What do you think will happen if you normally price your designs at $300, never get hired, drop your price in a promotion to $150 (cut them in HALF), and you finally get a client to even ask you how much you charge. The client won’t hire you for $200, they’ll bargain it down, using your desperation against you, probably cutting it in half to $100. Why do you agree? Why do you cut your price in the first place? If you can’t get hired for the price you think is right, then that means you have some knowledge to catch up on. If you don’t have a portfolio, you have to make one, and in the meantime experiment with your creativity, new effects, new styles - everything.

Firmly set your standards. Us designers are “lucky” in our line of work. True clients won’t go for some skill-less, moral-less, standard-less newbie-designer. They like and respect designers who not only design astonishingly, but have an astonishing attitude. Set a minimum for yourself, and never go below it. Let’s say you want to (EXAMPLE) charge $750 per design. A client approaches you, and says “You know what man, I’ve only got $500 to spare, what do you say?”… Personally, I’d not take the job. I’d kindly say these words. “I’m sorry, my minimums are at $750 for the work you’re looking to get done.” - And there’s a perfect example in this episode of Tweak. Basically, the situation is, Josh Itawa doesn’t go below his minimum price. For doing that, the client sees his standards, his self respect and self value, and hires him for a job with a budget double his minimum price.

Determination. This ties in with point #1. You have to be determined to meet all requirements, and go over the requirements. Set the benchmark for quality. Be determined enough to care about meeting your deadlines that your client and you agreed on. Be determined enough to cover ever detail and element to flatter your client. Be determined enough to not just hand over the completed design, rather, take your own time to make sure the source files are neat, there are directions, and (my personal favorite) … a client thank-you note showing your respect and thankfulness to the client. Go above and beyond, it’ll be worth it.

This isn’t all, at all. Though following these tips is an excellent start. I’m sure if you’re an experienced designer, you know the benefits these qualities reap, and you know these qualities are the kind that clients look for when hiring their designers.

Clients will not pass on a designer with the 5 qualities listed above, incredible skill, and a great attitude to simply save them money. They know that hiring you, with everything I’ve mentioned so far, is much more profitable short term, and in the long run, than hiring someone from an “outsourcing” country for half the price, attitude, knowledge, and quality.

This is how to keep your job, and how to compete with all of the lowballers in the world. I’ve seen very many people complain about designers lowering their prices, and diminishing the market. That’s not true, they’re not touching the market. Those designers are either desperate, lazy, have no morals … no standards, aren’t determined, and flip the equation to say “quantity > quality”. They attract clients with low standards, who don’t know what they want, yet won’t like what you make because its “not what we want”.

And of course, this all leads to creativity. One of my favorite words. To accomplish what I’ve told you, you have to be creative.

And that’s all! If you enjoyed reading this, please comment and discuss it… And hopefully you’ll give it a digg (this is the right link now).

Ciao!

(PS - I know China and India can also have some very creative, very smart people. I’m not being and “ist” (racist, internationalist), nor am I against anyone who tries. I understand people have to make a living somehow, and hopefully you don’t take my post as stereotyping those countries. All I’m saying is, its common for companies to outsource to those countries because the workers there work for half the price.)

The snow has gone too far. I’m lucky to be posting this here tonight for you to view… While driving home today, I believe I passed around 10 cars in ditches, upside-down, crashed, everything. There were police roadblocks everywhere, and it was hard to actually get to the destination you were interested in getting to because of all the snow, and on top of that … It was snowing the entire time.

The roads are all ice, the snow is rock solid - impossible to shovel, hard to snow blow with the machine.

Its 29 degrees Fahrenheit, which is roughly -2 celcius. Check these images out:

I guess this is the actual snow view from satellite.

And this is the map of coldest and harshest?

So as you can see, its pretty crazy weather. I barely made it home. I purchased my car about 3 months ago brand new (’07 model) so its got the latest and greatest anti-slip technology, plus all season high performance tires. So, I’m happy, and I managed a quick update.

Ciao!

Hey everyone, I’m posting this out of respect towards a fellow client I finished a few weeks ago. He’s a very creative guy, and I imagine this will be one great service, once it launches… So I’m hoping to generate some more hype by signing up for his mailing list.

The service is basically like what Blogger.com offers, except in a different way. He hasn’t shared his plans too much with me, but from what I was hired to do and how he talks about things … It sounds like a great project you’d want to know about when it launches, even if its just to check it out.

“Blogonize will be a new revolution in free blog hosting power that you can’t miss out on!”

So get on over to Blogonize.com and sign up!
(PS, its spam free, check the privacy statement).

Well, today’s post should be a quick one, and a bitchy one. I am dedicating this entire post to Tyler Cruz and domains, so enjoy it.
I’ll begin by providing some recent hate Tyler has been receiving from others…

Vince (MyHateBlog): Arrogance Defined.

Meghan Schmuck (BobSchmuck): The Douchebag That Is Tyler Cruz.

Oridian (PublisherForums): Basically Tyler trying to bash an ad network, but having the entire plan backfire on him. In one comment he states he’ll be giving a bad review on his website, PublisherSpot, here.

All over Chatwebdev’s IRC channel, around 90% laugh and hate Tyler in #chatwebdev. In fact, there was a tag - !modulus (tyler’s IRC name) - that when called on outputted “gay pr*ck”.

Alright, these are just four things, and sure … everyone is hated on at some point or another in their life. But I’m here to add a #5 to the recent list. My respect for Tyler has gone down the hill faster than an an avalanche. Now, I simply don’t like Tyler. But that’s me, and I won’t create another post bashing the guy, rather I’ll bash a snipped of advice from a recent post on his blog.

“

Personally, I think anything other than .com, .net, and .org is pretty much worthless. And I’m not exagerrating. I’d say everything else to be worth roughly around 1% the amount of the .com. So, if CLOTHES.com is worth $500,000, then CLOTHES.US or CLOTHES.INFO world be worth more like $5,000… and that’s still being extremely generous!

My point? Don’t waste your time getting anything other than .com, .net, or .org. Any other extention sucks.

“

Being in the domain industry for several years, this is probably the worst advice I’ve ever seen given to users / readers. Especially the last statement, “Any other extention sucks.” (its extension, tyler.) This is simply an irrational thing to say, with no thought, and no creativity induced whatsoever. After I read this, I realized what Tyler Cruz is … Uncreative. Its simple as that.

I’m now personally giving all of my readers domaining advice. Every extension has potential. No extension is entirely worthless. Obviously, there are many cases where they are … because of beginners attempting to sell low quality keywords paired with third world TLD’s and undeveloped sites. But that’s not the point. If you’re creative enough, your possibilities are endless - and all the same whether you own the .COM or the .MS domain. If you’re after selling your domain name, then sure, the .com will be the most valuable in most instances, but trying to put down extensions past .COM, .NET, and .ORG is senseless, because .BIZ, .INFO, .US, .EU, .IN, .IM, .SC, .AT, .PL, .CO.UK, .NO (et cetera, et cetera…) all sell well too. They’re all bursting with potential, you just have to be creative enough.

Let’s analyze the market of one TLD Tyler Cruz would call ‘bad’ and ‘useless’ - dot US. The .US extension was developed in 1985 as a ccTLD (country-code-top-level-domain). Sources show that after the .US sunrise period, on August 30th 2002, an average of 1,000 new .US domains were registered per day. Over 331,000 .US domains were registered from August 11th 2002 through January 1st 2003. There have been .US domains that have sold for a price range up to $100,000 USD. And, you’re saying its worthless, Tyler?

Then you take a look at creative people. Take Joshua Schachter (founder of Del.icio.us), for example. This is one of the web’s hottest, most popular 2.0 startups. What’s the TLD? Not .com, not .net, not .org … .US! This domain would barely have value if it were .com, compared to .us… Think about it, del.icio.com? icio.com? Other than it being a decent LLLL.com - Its incomparable to the tyler-acclaimed worthless ccTLD.

I’d expect someone like him to argue this as “oh, but this is a special instance!”, and I’d just have one word to say back. “No”. Its not a special instance, anyone could have thought this project up, and many have - just not in the same way.

Think about what Tyler is saying, he’s also saying that mega million TLD’s such as dot TV (.tv) are worthless too? Now I’m sure if you know a little something about domains you’d stop right there and say to yourself … “bullshit”. Yet, Tyler, with his 345 loyal feed readers and many many blog readers gives the worst advice in the world - “Any other extention sucks.” - because he brokered a domain or two.

I’m here proving what he’s saying is totally wrong, and that if you’re a reader of his blog you may want to consider anything he says before taking it in deeply, because Tyler is overall a very uncreative person who can sometimes give the like in advice.

And I wanted to link exchange with him … hah!

That’s all for now folks, stay tuned for some good news coming up.

Well, I’ve been away for a while. I finished my clients, I sold all but three of my projects, and I decided to just take a break. I came back yesterday night to check out what’s going on, and just a few things are happening in the coming days.

I was asked by good internet buddy Feros (Owner of NetBusinessBlog) to write a few guest posts on his blog, NetBusinessBlog. I haven’t talked to him much about it, but hopefully I’ll be able to write up some great articles on there and on Fruda to keep everyone interested and happy with their ventures.

In my last post I mentioned something about a project with Dave (Jakowenko). We’re both into wild TLD’s, ones like .sc, .im, .st, .no - et cetera… As well as, obviously, the primary TLDs and basically all TLDs. The project will be more of a ‘break-even, invest profit into making more tools’ kind of project, and will be a very helpful resource to all who domain (verb), so look out for that.

I’ve partnered up with a good bud and partner, Matthew, on SharedPCGames. The website is very impressive, it averages around 10,000 unique visitors a day, or so, and makes quite a nifty sum each month. Hopefully the website will be totally revamped and built twice as strong to compete with MiniClip and things of the sort.

My other project, which is more of a YouTube style 2.0 social community type of deal, has also been undergoing development for about a month now. I’ve been scouting around for a programmer and coder to hire, with some luck. I already have a server, and will be getting 2 dedicated IP’s from my primary ISP and another backup from a different ISP … As well as a T1 + connection. The server has a very advanced firewall we built ourselves, and so far is hack free (over 5,000 attempts a day according to linksys logs). The project is quite a complicated one, and I had to cut out many things like FVC and all of the complex scripting that goes with it (ffmepg, RoR, LAME, php/perl). Can you imagine I’ve been quoted $4,000 (lowest) for FVC? So, I probably will hold on to that idea once the website takes off. Just wanted to give my readers a heads-up on some project work for once.

And that’s it! I’ll think up a codename for that #4 project, and talk more of it in the coming days.
Stay Fresh

Can you even go 24? This is just a cool little experiment I found on digg today. I know I can go 24 hours, and looks like most people claim they can. I think if you say you can’t, you’re either too tied up in the whole computer business/you need to work on your websites, you’ve got no friends, or you have money to make.

Welcome back, welcome back… I’ve been looking at my blog for a while, and thinking about it, and I believe that I will give fruda either a complete redesign, or … a realign. (If you’re not familiar with the term ‘realign’, check it out here).

I’ve grown bored of this current design, and I’ve also considered the limited interactivity factor. I currently have around 100 feed subscribers via non-feedburner RSS feed, though I’m hoping to use my feed channel there with the update, possibly (http://feeds.feedburner.com/Fruda).

So with this post I’m just letting all of my readers know my blog will become better for the better, with much more updates, much more good info and coverage, much more fun and all that good stuff.

I’ve also got a new [small] project/resource/utility which I’ll probably blog on about, later on… And I’ll probably have a little giveaway going on with my buddy Dave.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in the new year of 2007 I’ve completed a client that required no privacy agreement. I’m overjoyed that I can show it off. Throughout the entire time I worked with my client, I used methods I stated previously in my Client -> Designer relationship post, and they all worked quite well. It was a great pleasure working for him, so I’m returning the favor and hopefully generating some hype about his new project.

Here are screenshots of the work I did…

Its a blogging service, just like Blogger.com (for example). The client is very creative, and I imagine this will be a hit. Check out the website at blogonize.com - there is nothing there yet, though he will shortly put up a little beta tester system (everyone has a chance at it, he’ll be frequently giving out invites), so get on over there in a few weeks or so and try to score yourself an invite.

Feel free to comment on what you can see (I know its not much). I may post lighter and fuller previews as well, so stay tuned!

Ciao
